Amy Reed’s Interview with Audrina and Las Vegas

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Last Friday my husband and I, as well as Kim and Keith (CD cameraman), flew to Las Vegas for the clothing shows. There were three shows: ENK at The Wynn, Project at the Sands and Magic in the Convention Center. Unfortunately our designers were scattered among the three so we had to hop between the shows. The day before they started my husband and I were laying by the pool and we saw Seth the owner of What Comes Around Goes Around. We chatted with him for awhile (he told me that another contemporary site is going to be launching Vintage soon, I did it first!!) before briefly meeting Tara from J Brand. I then had lunch with my old friend and roommate from NY who I hadn’t seen for years. On our first day of the shows, Kim ran around to each one early and got our badges and Keith’s press pass so we wouldn’t have any problems getting our cameraman into the shows. The first day went smoothly, but when we showed up for a much anticipated celebrity interview we learned the interview was actually for the next day. We picked up a few great new lines and called it a day.

That night my husband and I ordered room service and fell asleep at 8pm for a little nap and didn’t wake up until around 9am the next morning, with several missed calls and texts from Keith and Kim to meet them out. So as we were getting ready to leave the show neither Kim or Keith were answering their phones. Strange! We called both of their rooms and Keith answered. We told him to get up and meet us downstairs for the show and asked him if he’d heard from Kim. He told us the night before they were at the VooDoo lounge and they both met people and left separately with the intention of meeting back together around 2am at XS back at the Wynn. However, he said they never ended up reconnecting. We met Keith at the show with still no word from Kim. We called and called and after 11am we really started to get worried. Kim is VERY responsible and no amount of partying has ever kept her from work in the morning. Keith wasn’t much help because he had to look at pics in his phone to even remember what happened the night before. As noon rolled around and many tweets about Kim gone missing, my husband called Wynn security to go to her room and check on her. He explained how reliable Kim is and security politely said, “Vegas does strange things to people, we hear this a lot.” So thank God security found and woke up Kim. She was shocked to realize that she had no recollection of the night before. Kim was mortified and said how thankful she is her parents don’t follow me on twitter (and hope they don’t read my blog now too). Later that day, I interviewed Audrina Patridge from The Hills!! She is the face of Divine Rights of Denim, which I got to talk to her about. I must add she is probably the nicest celeb I have ever met!!! Check out the video on chickdowntownTV.com.

Later that night I put on my ultra puffy party dress and sequin bolero and went for dinner at Sinatra at Encore. Keith met me at the restraunt bar so we could get the Audrina video up that night. I was twittering all the days events and the Wynn twittered me saying how much they love my tweets!! How cool?! Next on the agenda was the Hudson Jeans Party, which although I planned to attend and heard was fabulous, after a few drinks and blackjack (we played next to one of founders of J BRAND who was the life of the table, totally hilarious) my husband and I got a decaf latte and a big pink rasberry macaroon and called it a night.

Check out some of the pics from my trip below…..

Weekends

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

This weekend I asked my Twitter followers how they love to spend their weekends. In addition to posting some of my favorite responses to this question, I thought I’d share how I like to spend my weekends as well…

- I love the reprieve of answering 100+ emails coming in at all hours of the day. Because most showrooms, etc. are closed on the weekends, this number is drastically decreased.
- Guilt free sleeping in!
- Brunch with my son and husband. We do this EVERY weekend. I order something healthy and get to pick at Brody’s pancakes.
- Cooking. I just watched Julie and Julia, which inspired me to cook. BTW, great movie! This weekend I made Bruschetta and Chicken Madeira.

Julie & Julia

- Reading. I am reading several books right now (I have a short attention span), including The Widow Clicquot, which is the story of the Madame Clicquot of my favorite Veuve Clicquot Champagne. The first time I had Veuve we had just jumped off our friend’s boat in the Hamptons and swam to the shore of Sunset Beach. There we had lunch on the beach and drank bottles of Veuve. It is one of my best memories and I have loved the champagne ever since. I am also reading Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. It’s about a girl of 15 who dies and goes to “Elsewhere” where you age backward then return to Earth.

The Widow Clicquot & Elsewhere

- I also like to get in a really long workout and call friends and family that I haven’t spoken to all week.
- And last but not least, watching Entourage and Hung Sunday night on HBO!!!

Entourage & Hung

Here were a few of my favorite answers from my Twitter followers:

Winner alexaRkopel: I’m in my 20s but I still love going to the movies w/my dad. It’s been a tradition since I was a kid & I’ll never get too old for my dad.
jillstein: Perfect day = sleep late, long run on Hudson, hang w/ hubby, read on roof deck, nap, cook dinner for friends.
oceangirl621: Random road trips w/ my hubby, our baby, & the dog-never know where we’ll end up, but it’s always an adventure of some sort!
grrr_emily: My ideal weekend includes sunny weather, cute shoes, vintage shops, and Starbucks iced green tea, with my boyfriend =)
beehock: Catch up with my mom! we live far away, but we love to spend quality time chattin’ on the phone about last weeks events :)
thedevotv: Running along San Francisco’s Embarcadero and getting fresh squeezed OJ from the Farmer’s Market after finishing!
drakesmommie: Being with my son! I never feel like I get enough time in the week, so weekends I always try to do something special with him.
jillaty: Spend time with my family, almost every weekend we take trips to various places, last week was Vermont for ice cream!
mamahlee: Playing tennis with my father. We hardly see each other because of hectic schedules. It’s nice to catch up and let out stress.

Table Topics

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Last night at Pottery Barn I bought a game called “Table Topics”. It’s a deck of cards and each one has a question on it. My husband and I played last night over dinner. Here are a few of my favorite questions and how I answered them:

What is your dream job?
Major Movie Star (like Nicole Kidman). Her Chanel commercials made me cry; they were so beautiful! And I loved Moulin Rouge. My husband also said movie star.

Table Topics

Do you live more in the Past, Present or Future?
I said “Present”. Everyone agreed that I do or at least I try to.

Who would you like to trade places with for a month?
I said The President. I’d like to know what he knows.

If you were cremated where would you like your ashes spread?
I said Georgica Beach in East Hampton because some of my best memories were there.

Georgica Beach

Most memorable meal?
Tasting menu at Babbo in NYC.

Ever had an experience that has led you to believe in ghosts or angels?
Yes, a SCARY incident with a Ouija board when I was in high school and as for  Angels when my grandfather who had past away, came to me in a dream and told me to “tell [my] family he would see us in the next stage of life”.

Which celebrity do people say you most resemble?
People say I look like Kate Hudson.

Which celeb would you most like to see in person? I’m sure you’d never guess this one…

The Fabulously Ugly Mug

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Last week I was on Ebay, which is a rarity anymore. I had just picked up bundles of Peonies at Whole Foods and was looking through my vase collection to decide which one to use. I realized I was bored with all of them and wanted to find something fresh and different. I recalled an article in a decorating magazine that I had seen, which showed different ways to display flowers and how to use beautiful mugs for small arrangements, so I decided to consult eBay. I was scrolling through an array of mugs when I saw this fabulously ugly chalice-looking mug!!

The Fabulously Ugly Mug

It had a face modeled to the side and in the description it said that its’ origin dated back to the 18th century. I thought it would look absolutely amazing filled with peonies (my favorite) and would add TONS of character to my apartment. I thought this was a face only I could love! A treasure no one else would value. I quickly bid, but immediately I was OUTBID!! So I upped my bid. And I was outbid AGAIN!! As outrageous as it sounds, I put in a max bid of $100 (at the time it was $15) figuring this would secure my high bidder status, but when I checked back today, I saw at the last minute some eBayer had outbid me!! I was heartbroken. I have been imaging how my funny mug would look in my apartment ever since the moment I saw it. I cant believe I didn’t win. :(

Larks vs. Owls

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

I recently read an article in Scientific American comparing people to Larks and Owls. “Larks” are people who get up early naturally and feel most productive in the morning, while “Owls” are people who feel more inspired at night and like to stay up extra late, while avoiding waking up up early at all costs. I am one of those people!! I would actually go so far as to say I feel physically ill when I have to be up early in the morning. I make all appointments, flights, ect. after 9am as anything earlier is just plain torture for me.

Larks vs. Owls

It’s 2am on Sunday night and I am up working. Although I must admit I am super comfy in my favorite Gypsy 05 Riley sweatshirt and pants (more colors on the way!). I just emailed three people in our office “to do” lists for Monday morning. While they’ll have my emails, they probably will not see me until at least 10. :)

The Supermodels

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

This weekend while flipping through Bazaar’s April issue, I was thrilled to come across an article that I have not been able to stop thinking about. Titled “Best Models of All Time”, the story details famous fashion icons from the 50s to today. Most notably, it shows a famous piece by Peter Lindbergh, a renowned photographer who is credited as defining the “Era of the Supermodel”. The photo was taken back in 1990 and debuted on the cover of the January issue of British Vogue. Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, and Tatjana Patitz were huddled together in the streets of downtown New York City. The first fashion images that shaped the way I knew and loved fashion were of these five women: The Supermodels.

My mind instantly flooded with memories of when I was a little girl flipping through the pages of high fashion magazines. Just as I have followed fashion most of my life, I’ve also followed the models. They were almost as important as the clothing because they brought the pieces to life. Throughout the years as I have followed their pictures I felt like I grew to know them. I can still vividly remember Cindy Crawford’s Cosmo covers. They were just so insanely gorgeous and will forever be etched in my memory. Although I do have to admit that Claudia Schiffer’s Guess ads are probably my all time favorite! Then a little later came Nikki Taylor, “the girl next door”, and Kate Moss, who I didn’t get at the time, but have recently come to adore. Reliving all of these fashion flashbacks, I couldn’t help but wonder what happened to the supermodel? Sure we have the Victoria’s Secret models, Gisele Bundchen, Jessica Stam, and as I mentioned Kate Moss, but I am struggling to bring to mind a group of present day women that will live in infamy with “The Supermodels”.

I spend a lot of time, going through agency’s sites, looking through models’ comp cards, and meeting with models. I really believe that a great model is more than a pretty face but someone who has an amazing aura and personality that comes through in the images. I want a girl that is unique, one with her very own distinct look. I believe we have had some girls that fit this description, but I am still looking for our very own supermodel! I’d love to hear who some of your fashion icons are and how you feel about today’s “supermodels”. Also next month, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be debuting a new exhibit: The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion. I can’t wait to check it out!

Close Encounter with Sarah Jessica Parker

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Since many of you seem to be big Carrie Bradshaw/SJP fans, I wanted to share the story about how I came face to face with my idol. I had just finished lunch at Barneys in NYC. It was a stormy day; the rain was pouring down! As we waited in the entrance way for a car to pick us up, out walks Sarah Jessica Parker herself, alone, dressed to kill and in full hair and makeup. I think she had a TV appearance that morning. With bags in both hands, she slowly walked to the door in front of where my husband and I were standing and said, very politely, “Excuse Me.” My husband, not having a clue as to who she was smiled and said, “Hi, of course” and stepped aside while I stood there frozen in utter shock!

I tried to speak, I wanted to tell her how she and her show single handedly changed my life. How I moved across the country alone to the big city, where I met my husband, and began this journey into the fashion industry and it was all because of her. But instead I stood there unable to move or speak. I also held in my hand a national magazine with one of our chickdowntown ads in it. I could have showed it to her!! Told her she had been my inspiration!

Once the initial shock wore off I saw that she was climbing into a Silver Toyota Prius, and I told my husband to run out, knock on her window and show her our ad. He is not shy in any sense of the word, but knocking on her window was out of the question- even for him. I watched her car pull away and stood in disbelief at what had just happened. If me and SJP should ever come face to face again I WILL say hello even if it kills me!
