After spotting these images on fashiongonerogue I just had to share them. Stylist Vanessa Bellugeon used designs from Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and Chanel to create the looks on model Naomi Preizler for this shoot in the December edition of L’ Officiel Paris shot by photographer Alexander Neumann. Gorgeous!

Met Costume Gala 2011

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

The Met Ball is fashion’s biggest night out. This year’s event, on Monday night, celebrated the opening of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty which showcased the late designer’s brilliant work. The event took place against a backdrop of the museum decorated like an English Garden with towering trees and hedges sprouting from the halls, pots of roses and peonies, heather and wildflower lining the staircase and shimmering votives on rustic wood tabletops. Florence + The Machine performed and guests included everyone from Rock Royalty Sir Paul McCartney to NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

While most red carpet events center around an award such as the Oscars, the Met Ball is all about fashion. The stars take this opportunity to push the fashion boundaries in a way they may not do at a more conservative award show. It’s always fascinating to see what everyone chooses to wear.

Some of the nights best dressed stars included Beyonce and Gisele Bundchen in Alexander McQueen, Rihanna in Stella McCartney, Jennifer Hudson in Vera Wang, Ashley Greene in Donna Karen, Kristen Bell in a one shoulder, golden Tory Burch, Taylor Swift in a stunning J. Mendel, Emma Roberts looked effortlessly chic in Michael Kors, Diane Kruger wore a gorgeous design by Jason Wu and fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld’s date Blake Lively wore a dress by, you guessed it, Chanel.

Kate Middleton’s Royal Wedding Gown Gallery

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Since Kate Middleton and Prince William announced their engagement the fashion world has been buzzing about who Kate would choose to design her wedding gown for the big day. Well the wait is finally over! Kate walked down the aisle today wearing a gown by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen

Individual flowers were hand cut from lace and hand-engineered onto the ivory silk tulle dress to create the design, which features rose, thistle, daffodil, and shamrocks on it; a nod to national flowers of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The bodice is made of ivory satin and narrows at the waist. It is padded at the hips to make Kate’s waist appear even smaller, not that she needed it. Middleton’s veil is made of layers of ivory silk tulle. It is trimmed with hand-embroidered flowers, sewn on by the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace.

Middleton also wore a Cartier ‘halo’ tiara, which was made by the jewelry company in 1936. It was lent to Middleton by Queen Elizabeth II. She wore earrings by Robinson Pelham. They are diamond-set oak leaves with a pear-shaped diamond drop and a pave-set diamond acorn in the center. The inspiration was her family’s new coat of arms, which includes acorns on it.

“Miss Middleton wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterizes Alexander McQueen’s work,” the Clarence House wrote of her dress pick.

Cannes Film Festival 2010

This year at the Cannes Film Festival, Gucci seemed to rule the red carpet. Multiple stars wore gowns by Gucci, including Salma Hayek, Camilla Belle and Naomi Watts. Cate Blanchett looked stunning in an Alexander McQueen gown and Kate Beckinsale looked radiant (as always) in a beautiful Marchesa gown.

RIP Alexander McQueen

RIP Alexander McQueen

Yesterday morning my associate emailed me a post about the death of Alexander McQueen. I didn’t believe it. Now after the news being everywhere, I believe it and am very saddened by it. I am also saddened by the fact that it appears he committed suicide. I don’t know too much about Alexander McQueen except that he was a brilliant designer. I recently visited his store in Las Vegas and posted some pics of his looks on my Twitter. I also recently blogged about how amazing Camilla Belle looked in his dress that appeared to be inspired by the Sea. I also bought his line for chickdowntown so in a strange way I feel like I knew him. I know so many creative people who are such “good people” that they have difficulty living in what can be such a hard, cruel world. I hope that he has found the peace he was seeking and thank him for blessing us fashion lovers with his beautiful gift.

What the celebs are saying (from eonline.com):

• Madonna: Lee McQueen was a truly unique visionary in the world of fashion. A creator of beauty. What a tragedy.
• Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief, Vogue: “We are devastated to learn of the death of Alexander McQueen, one of the greatest talents of his generation. He brought a uniquely British sense of daring and aesthetic fearlessness to the global stage of fashion. In such a short career, Alexander McQueen’s influence was astonishing—from street style to music culture and the world’s museums. His passing marks an insurmountable loss.”
• Sarah Jessica Parker: “I am shocked and overcome with grief upon learning about the untimely death of the quiet genius Alexander McQueen. My heart goes out to his family and all those who worked for and with him. In his atelier, his showroom, his stores and various business interests that were so rapidly growing, he was beloved. By all of them. He was talented well beyond his years and the seriousness and unrivaled talent which he applied to his work is in bountiful display year after year and collection after collection. Every single inspired, original, lofty, whimsical, stunning, brilliant and jaw dropping detail was Alexander Mcqueen. There has never been anyone like him. And there simply never will be. What is more devastating is that despite all his success thus far, creatively, critically and commercially, his greatest achievements lay ahead of him. The future would be whatever he hoped to make of it. His independence, his skill, his quiet fortitude, his devotion, his love of his work, family and friends will be an unthinkable loss. And the vigilance with which he protected his work and those he loved was both incredibly powerful and quietly heart rending. In my brief but honored time spent with him I learned he would never let even the tiniest and seemingly inconsequential detail be unfinished. That’s why his death is so haunting. God speed Lee. It has been a privilege for all of us to know you. You will be indescribably missed.”
• Kate Moss, via her rep: “Kate is shocked and devastated at the tragic loss of her dear friend Lee McQueen. Her thoughts are with his family at this sad time. We would also ask that Kate’s privacy is respected.”
• Heidi Klum: “I have never worked with him, but what a talented man. To me, he is one of the most talented men. It’s really sad. One of the biggest lost in the fashion world. A lot of people make basic things that are beautiful…but he was out of the box. Extraordinary designer.”
• Naomi Campbell: “I am truly devastated to lose my close friend. His talent had no boundaries and he was an inspiration to everyone who worked with him and knew him. This is a sad day to all who loved him around the world and my condolences are with his family. I will miss him so much, he will never be forgotten.”
• Victoria Beckham: “Today, the fashion industry has lost a true great. An icon of all time. He made all he touched beautiful and will be desperately missed. My heart is very much with his family and friends at this very sad time.”
• Sandra Bullock: “A brilliant artist has left the building. My thoughts go out to those who love and care for him, and who are now experiencing the great void he left behind.”
• Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel designer: “I found his work very interesting and never banal. There was always some attraction to death, his designs were sometimes dehumanized. Who knows, perhaps after flirting with death too often, death attracts you.”
• Kristen Johnston: “I just think he’s brilliant. He’s like Vivienne Westwood. I think his vision will be re-created and redone year after year after year for like 40 years. I just think he was ahead of his time, I really do. The cut and the structure. [His death] is really just terrible.”
• Camilla Belle: “This is a devastating loss for both the fashion industry and art world. Alexander McQueen’s designs were consistently unique and pushed boundaries. I always felt extremely special when wearing his creations, and am deeply saddened that we have lost this artistic genius too soon.”
• Daniel Vosovic, designer and former Project Runway contestant: “A stone dropped in my throat when I heard this morning. I just think it’s so tragic. He’s such an artist. It’s a huge loss.”
Meanwhile, in the Twitterverse:
• JanetJackson: “Today we lost a True Genius, Alexander McQueen. He possessed a unique creativity that will never b recaptured. Alexander invited me to my very 1st fashion show (his in London.) There will NEVER b another!”
• tyrabanks: “RIP Alexander McQueen. so so sad. Such a huge loss. He was one of my favorite designers. He will be missed.”

Runway or Realway?

Real Way vs Runway

I’m obsessed with this dress from McQueen’s Spring collection, which appears to be inspired by the sea. The model’s look is dramatic on the runway, to say the least. Camilla Belle wore it with nude pumps and understated jewelry to an event. I think her choice of accessories, makeup and hair, looks great and enhances the already show stopping dress. Which way do you like it? Runway or Realway?

Golden Globe Fashion

The day after a big award show like the Golden Globes, I love to read all the fashion recaps online. I wanted to share my six favorite looks from the Golden Globes. Emily Blunt in Dolce and Gabbana with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, Cameron Diaz in Alexander McQueen, Maggie Gyllenhaal in RM by Roland Mouret, Diane Kruger in Christian Lacroix with Chanel jewelry, Anna Kendrick in Marchesa with Cartier jewels, and Olivia Wilde in Gucci with Tiffany jewelry. I thought everyone looked great but these were my personal pics. Who did you think was the Golden Globes best dressed?
