Met Costume Gala 2011

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

The Met Ball is fashion’s biggest night out. This year’s event, on Monday night, celebrated the opening of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty which showcased the late designer’s brilliant work. The event took place against a backdrop of the museum decorated like an English Garden with towering trees and hedges sprouting from the halls, pots of roses and peonies, heather and wildflower lining the staircase and shimmering votives on rustic wood tabletops. Florence + The Machine performed and guests included everyone from Rock Royalty Sir Paul McCartney to NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

While most red carpet events center around an award such as the Oscars, the Met Ball is all about fashion. The stars take this opportunity to push the fashion boundaries in a way they may not do at a more conservative award show. It’s always fascinating to see what everyone chooses to wear.

Some of the nights best dressed stars included Beyonce and Gisele Bundchen in Alexander McQueen, Rihanna in Stella McCartney, Jennifer Hudson in Vera Wang, Ashley Greene in Donna Karen, Kristen Bell in a one shoulder, golden Tory Burch, Taylor Swift in a stunning J. Mendel, Emma Roberts looked effortlessly chic in Michael Kors, Diane Kruger wore a gorgeous design by Jason Wu and fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld’s date Blake Lively wore a dress by, you guessed it, Chanel.

Encyclopedia of the Exquisite

I picked up this beautiful book, The Encyclopedia of the Exquisite:  An Anecdotal History of Elegant Delights by Jessica Kerwin Jenkins, at an Anthropologie store and bought it not only out of interest but because I was unable to put it down. Not only does it define words like Xenia, which describes ancient Greek hospitality, but it also tells the story of the history behind every exquisite thing in the book such as champagne, unicorns and twilight – the period between daylight and darkness not the movie :)  A few of my favorite fashionistas describe the book perfectly. Here is what they had to say about it:

“A delightful ode to everyday elegance that brims with tales showing how beauty can be found in the most unlikely places. Encyclopedia of the Exquisite has the potential to make our lives that much more interesting. It left me truly inspired.”  – Sarah Jessica Parker

”A beautifully researched and written book. Every story – whether on the origins of badminton or the art of Renaissance sotelties – is fascinating and inspiring. I kept turning the page, wanting to learn more.”  – Tory Burch

What to Wear The Hamptons

There is no better place to spend the summer than the Hamptons. East Hampton is my favorite place in the world. It has the most gorgeous, unspoiled beaches and laid back vibe. If you are planning a trip to the Hamptons, I suggest packing the following:

1. Shay Todd uptown bandeau bikini Netaporter.com
2. Bag ShopRumor.com at a bargain 40.00! (sold out this color way but available in more colors)
3. MICHELE Sunglasses Nordstrom.com
4. Zimmerman frill bandeau bikini Netaporter.com
5. Eugenia Kim wide brim sunhat (this color is sold out, but you can find a black version at intermixonline.com or a similar style at theoutnet.com)
6. Shay Todd hooded terry dress Netaporter.com
7. Steven Alan bungalo floral cotton dress Netaporter.com
8. Tory Burch flip flops in white  Toryburch.com
9. Rachel Comey bra dress available at LaGarconne.com

When I stay I love to go to Babette’s for breakfast. All the food is organic. CittaNuova is great for lunch and for dinner try The Palm or Nick & Toni’s. They are both quite a scene, and you can almost guarantee celeb sightings every night. At Nick & Toni’s, I once sat right next to Dave Matthews and his date and on another night Mr. Big, Chevy Chase, Lindsey Lohan, and Beth and Howard Stern! The list goes on. The food is also amazing which is no surprise considering they grow most of their own vegetables! Try the tartufo for dessert if you can. It usually sells out by 10. For shopping check out Main Street. You’ll find great boutiques like Scoop, Intermix and Tory Burch stocked with beach chic pieces!!
